Types of Steel Materials and Their Uses

Steel is a versatile material that can be used for a variety applications. In fact, it is estimated that 55 percent of the average car is composed of steel. The kind of alloy used to manufacture it determines its flexibility, as they affect the material’s durability, strength and performance. For instance, the manner the process of cooling the metal can have a significant impact on its microstructure and thus its overall properties. It can be altered to achieve certain characteristics like machinability yielding strength, and corrosion resistance.

In its most basic form, steel is iron that has been alloyed with other elements to improve its physical properties and make it suitable for specific uses. The proportion of the additional alloying elements determines which category of steel it belongs to and the overall performance in different applications.

For example stainless steel has at least 11% chromium, which makes it resistant to corrosion. This is what makes it ideal for a wide range of uses, including kitchen utensils and cutlery. Tool steel, on the other hand has an extremely high strength and abrasion resistance that makes it an ideal material for hand machines and tools. Carbon steels can also be adapted to a variety of applications due to their excellent ductility. Electrical steel is a specialized steel grade that is composed of silicon (typically at least 3%) This enhances the magnetic properties and decreases eddy-current losses. It is therefore ideal for transformer cores and laminations of electric motors.
