I finished my first full book a couple of months ago and am in the stage where I am waiting for publishers to respond to my submissions. Although previously published in a peer-reviewed textbook on resilience, the editors coordinated that book so I was spared involvement in the publishing aspects.

If you give the writer jumbled, confusing, unclear, or sketchy material, don’t expect instantaneous turnaround. Remember the “garbage in, garbage out” idea. If you provide jumbled input, you are clearly ensuring that the job will take longer and cost you more. The better starting product you provide to your writer, the faster – and cheaper – your results will be.

Indulging in Self-Praise: Authors who praise themselves and their books only prove to people what big egos they have. This lack of emotional intelligence likely also shows up in a lack of good judgment in writing the book. Don’t make your website read like a commercial for your book. Make it informative, but beginning with “My book is the best one ever written on this topic” and “This wonderful novel was written with touching scenes, engaging characters, etc.” is a turn-off. It’s fine if you have testimonials from others saying those things. Just don’t say them yourself. The same is true with the book’s cover. Tell people what your book is about, but save the praise for your endorsers.

These are 5 reasons why being an expert in your field is an important goal to have. It is something for which to strive, for these reasons and many more. Make it your goal to achieve expert status as soon as possible, but realize that these things take some time. It’s not going to happen overnight; allow yourself enough time to really work at achieving this status. Don’t get discouraged when it doesn’t happen next week or next month. If you put consistent time into it, you can achieve it.
